John Rogers Searle is an American philosopher. He is Willis S. and Marion Slusser Honorary Professor of Philosophy of Mind and Language and Professor at the Graduate School of the University of California at Berkeley. Widely known for his contributions to linguistic philosophy, philosophy of mind and social philosophy, he began teaching at UC Berkeley in 1959. As a college student at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, Searle was the secretary of "Student Against Joseph McCarthy". He received all of his undergraduate degrees, BA, MA and DPhil, from the University of Oxford where he held his first professorship. Then, at UC Berkeley, he became the first professor to join the Free Speech Movement 1964–1965. In the late 1980s, Searle challenged the limits of the 1980 Berkeley Rent Stabilization Order
